Literature Is the Greatest Skill

This academic writing class is different in some aspects compared to other writing classes. We aren’t just learning and using literature to continue enhancing our writing skills but also allowing us to freely express ourselves. An example of this class’s work would be learning about intersectionality. It is a great tool to become more aware of how we use this tool on a daily basis by communicating with others. When we describe somebody based on their age, physical appearance or other characteristics, we are using intersectional identity . However, there are challenges for individuals who are more than one of the identities listed. Our characteristics of identity can bring challenges we need to experience and become stronger mentally, and emotionally.

Another great example of this would be the TED talk, “My identity is Superpower not an obstacle” by America Ferrera. Many directors in the acting industry would reject her application based on her brown skin color and identifying as an latina actress. The stereotypes have been a problem for decades now therefore I can see Ferrera trying to spread awareness and encourage others to not let obstacles stop you from succeeding based on someone’s opinion or racism. She demonstrated her strength and perseverance by later on winning an Emmy Prime award for a novella led by her. This is history made in this world because this novella was led by a latina actress, the representation of latinos’ success. It’s an enormous accomplishment. This proves our identity is our superpower and not a weakness. I am enjoying this class because we have more work collaborations, it’s great to improve our communication skills. We have more ideas and different interpretations from readings, which fascinates me how literature may have different meanings to others.

Being able to read and write in English seems like such a minor skill to many but coming to the realization of the struggles people endure to become proficient in a language is very important. I, myself, take it for granted that I don’t read as often as I used to. When I first entered school I was behind in school. I wasn’t able to write or read and speak in English properly. My struggle became my motivation but overtime as I became more skilled, I forgot the importance of it. So, when I read “Why am I Writer” by Pat Mora it brought back memories of the experiences I faced and also the promise I made when I was learning English. To never take my skills of reading, speaking and writing for granted, this has been a reflection to this moment to figure out my priorities and put my education first. My education is the way to success for my family and I. I may have let life events get the best of me but as long as I’m trying in school and progressing towards my goals, then I am okay with that. As it was stated in the article “I write because I am a reader. I want to give to others what writers have given me, a chance to hear the voices of people” (32). This quotation is so important to acknowledge because of the significance of being able to comprehend what we read and form our own ideas on topics without any struggle
